Editor

American Board of Family Medicine

This is a Full-time position in Lexington, KY posted November 25, 2021.

Job Title: Editor

Job Description: The person chosen for this position will be a member of the Content Development Department for a medical specialty board that currently certifies approximately 90,000 physicians in Family Medicine.

This department develops and maintains the content for high-stakes computer-based assessments administered online and in secure testing centers.

Most of this content consists of multiple-choice questions and rationales that explain the answer.

While much of the work is performed individually with little direct supervision, the candidate who is selected will also work with two other editors and other members of the Content Development staff to edit, assemble, and maintain the documents, files, and databases required for reviewing and presenting examinations and other assessments.

In addition, the editors work with physicians who create this content, and also meet with groups of physicians over the course of the year to review the materials.

This will require out-of-state travel several times a year.

Occasional presentations to small and medium-size groups will also be required, including training sessions for physicians who write questions.

Salary will be based on education and experience.

Benefits include paid vacation, health insurance, and a 401-K plan.

Job Requirements: The applicant should have a degree in English or journalism, or another writing-related field, with a graduate degree preferred.

Essential skills include the ability to write clearly, the ability to reorganize and clarify materials written by physicians, and good proofreading skills.

Other essential qualities include flexibility, the ability to organize tasks and events, good interpersonal skills, self-motivation, and the ability to meet deadlines.

Attention to detail is also important, but so is the ability to see the bigger context.

Previous medical editing experience or familiarity with medical terminology is not required but would be considered an asset.

The candidate should at least be comfortable working in science-related fields.

Additional skills and abilities should include familiarity with software for word processing, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Experience with databases would also be useful.

Finalists for the position will be asked to edit some sample questions and supply at least three professional references.

Compensation: Salary commensurate with experience.

Excellent benefits program including Health, Dental, Vision, Section 125 Cafeteria Plan Premium reduction and Medical Flexible Spending Account, employer funded cash balance retirement plan, employee funded 401(k), Basic Life and AD&D insurance, and Long-Term Disability.

All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, protected veteran status, or disability status.
