Document Writer

Converge Technology Solutions

This is a Full-time position in Lexington, KY posted October 14, 2021.

We’re looking for a Technical Writer to produce high-quality documentation that contributes to the overall success of our products. As a technical writer, you will work collaboratively with product developers, product managers, engineers, and usability experts to document our products for customer consumption; ultimately making our products easier to use.

Objectives of this Role: 

  • Writes and updates material for reports, manuals, briefs, proposals, instruction books, FAQs, catalogs, and related technical and administrative publications concerned with work methods and procedures, and installation, operation, and maintenance for technical and non-technical audiences
  • Works closely with subject matter experts, engineers, developers, and product marketing team
  • Studies production, developmental, and experimental activities to determine operating procedure and detail
  • Interviews technical engineering personnel and reads journals, reports, and other material to become familiar with product technologies and production methods
  • Reviews manufacturers and trade catalogs, drawings, and other data relative to operation, maintenance, and service
  • Studies blueprints, flowcharts, sketches, drawings, parts lists, specifications, mock-ups, and product samples to integrate and delineate technology, operating procedure, and production sequence and detail
  • Organizes material and completes writing assignments according to set standards or in-house style guides regarding the order, clarity, conciseness, style, and terminology
  • Creates and builds out user assistance infrastructure, including how-to sections, FAQs, and Help sections
  • Reviews, updates, edits, and proofreads written materials such as product manuals, user manuals, how-to guides, EULAs, and FAQs
  • Recommends revisions or changes in scope, format, content, and methods of publication
  • Collects user data to determine areas of documentation that need revision and updating
  • Tests and updates existing documentation
  • May serve on quality design, product development, or user experience teams
  • May work with marketing to create customer-facing or internal material(s)
  • May maintain records and files of work and revisions
  • May works with marketing or engineering to select or create photographs, drawings, sketches, diagrams, and charts to illustrate the material
  • May lead or assist efforts in laying out material for publication

Job Requirements:

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Ability to write user-friendly, engaging copy about highly technical subjects.
  • Ability to understand and accurately translate technical information for a general audience.
  • Knowledge of coding and scripting languages, such as C++, Python, HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Familiarity with content and learning management systems (CMS and LMS).
  • Facility with documentation publishing software, such as GitBook, MadCap, RoboHelp, or Wikis.
  • Excellent problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
  • Past use of Agile/Scrum or similar collaborative tools a plus.
  • Expert use of Microsoft Office Tools such as Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.

Education, Experience & Licensing Requirements:

  • BA in English, writing, communications, curriculum development, or software/computer engineering.
  • MA in technical writing desired.
  • Society of Technical Writers certification a plus.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple simultaneous deadlines.
  • 3-5 years of technical writing experience.
  • Experience with product development, including past use of product development software.
  • Portfolio of technical writing samples for review.
